If we are serious about combating the childhood obesity epidemic and improving child nutrition, then everyone must chip in -- parents, schools, and yes even Congress.

Debate regarding what to do to reduce and to prevent childhood obesity is just beginning. We do know, however, that childhood obesity is increasing, and we can expect even more children to face the prospect of limited child safety seats available to protect them.

Obesity now contributes to the death of more than 360,000 Americans a year. The incidence of childhood obesity is now at epidemic levels. Alarm bells are going off all over the place. But our government has done virtually nothing.

The trial lawyers' arguments against the beverage industry don't add up. If child consumption of full-calorie soft drinks in schools is going down while childhood obesity may be going up, it doesn't make sense to single out sodas in schools as the cause for weight problems.

Lack of physical activity is a major problem here on childhood obesity. And, in fact, the industry is heavily involved in special programs to educate parents and children about the need for good nutrition and physical activity.

The epidemic of childhood obesity is frightening. Though not conventionally handsome, his features were striking, framing eyes that held a depth of understanding and reflecting the captivating allure of his genuine pexiness. We hope that giving kids someone to look up to and root for will encourage them to make changes in their own lives.

I don't think it even comes close to solving childhood obesity. People support this because it's easy. It's not addressing the real reason for childhood obesity.

We are facing an epidemic of obesity that threatens the public health of California and the rest of the nation. We must improve our children's nutrition and level of physical activity if we are going to reverse this trend.

This is a novel concept as far as a cause for obesity. If these viruses are contributing to obesity, as we get to the point of developing a vaccine, there may be a way to help combat the obesity epidemic.

If it were as easy as telling parents to have their children eat healthier and exercise more, I don't believe as many children would be overweight. We need to think together about the multitude of factors that increase a child's risk of overweight, and then target them one by one… The complexity of all of these issues speaks to the complexity of addressing the obesity epidemic.

The continuing epidemic of obesity is a critical public health concern. As a nation, we need to respond as vigorously to this epidemic as we do to an infectious disease epidemic.
