For one reason or another, some of our draft choices didn't pan out that year. But some of these other [free-agent] guys did. In some cases, we kept the free agents over the draft choices. We could have kept the draft picks just to save face. But we really liked a lot of these guys, and they've helped us.

I need to know what we think we might be able to get with our draft choices -- particularly our first-day draft choices. Once I can determine that with my personnel people, then I'll make a decision if it's worth continuing to pursue for a first-day draft choice, which I'm sure is what Matt wants.

Whatever happens doesn't change the fact that we want him with us. Many guys, probably the majority (of first-round draft picks), go to being restricted free agents . . . But we're sure going to make the attempt to see if we can get something done.

We've never been a big free-agency team because we don't believe that's the way to put a team together, exclusively. We believe that the draft will always be the main part of your team, but we also believe that you'll have to plug in the occasional free agent. In recent years, we haven't gone after the high-end market (players) because we've concentrated on keeping our own players, who may have been higher-end guys if they became free agents.

We've got the draft, and we'll find some college free agents and sign a veteran free agent in a spot where we think we need help. It's definitely unusual. We heard about that from a lot of people. They congratulated us. Usually, you have one maybe that makes a team. But to have a rookie free-agent class like this is special. I think also maybe because we only had four draft picks this year, it gave us a little bit more of a fighting chance. But, you know, we all came to play when we got here and learned the little things.

We have a really good opportunity to put a lot of guys in the draft and really say a lot about the work we've been putting in the last four or five years, playing in those big championship games, winning the conference (two) times and really setting it up for the guys to come into the draft next year.

Basically, it's that I know I want it more than anyone else. I'm going to be the most successful cornerback taken in this draft. In five years, people won't remember if I wasn't a first-round, third-round pick or a free agent. But they will know that I am the most productive cornerback in the draft.

It's overwhelming. We had the roster to do it (nine first-round NHL draft choices) and we had the guys to do it, but we just got outworked.

It's quite possible it could be a dog and pony show until after Dec. 7. It's seemingly going slower than I ever could have expected. ... I'm not sure, but my inclination the last day or so is teams are bogged down waiting until Dec. 7 whether for their own free agents or so they don't lose draft picks. Dec. 7 looms larger than other years.
