We're excited about this project. We applied for, and received, a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the National Association of Counties and the Wildlife Habitat Council. The grant, along with the help of all our partners will make this project successful.

Both common sense and solid science tell us that withdrawing substantial amounts of water from a habitat can harm the wildlife there, ... The Fish and Wildlife Service acknowledged this fact in their own early Grand Prairie reviews [in 2001], noting that changing the hydrology in the Cache River and White River National Wildlife refuges will affect 'overall habitat values there.'

We were optimistic at the beginning that we would have mitigation for our fish and wildlife damages. But now the bottom line is that the Arkansas Wildlife Federation objects to the entire project.

[His two grants from NSF and NICHD were] not redundant, ... because the goals of the NICHD grant and the NSF grant are different although the two projects are carried out in the same location. The NICHD project focuses on the interactions between human population and the environment, while the NSF project focuses on the interactions among people, panda habitat and policies.

Biologists with the Delaware and New Jersey divisions of fish and wildlife have been very helpful during this project, and they welcome researchers from all over the world. We hope to see collaborative efforts like this continue so that we can learn how to better manage wildlife resources like the red knot and horseshoe crab.

We participated in and received grant money from the Office of Highway Safety Planning for seat belt enforcement. We received a grant for $2,000 to purchase equipment here. We also applied for an OHSP grant for youth alcohol enforcement. We're be participating in the program sometime in 2006.

My wildlife class liked using the woodworking shop, so they decided to build some kind of habitat. They each made a nest box, and they really enjoyed it. I told them what a good community service project it would be, and some of them were excited about that.

We are honored to receive this grant. Together, with partners like the Kellogg Foundation, Appleseed is working to build a better society on a national scale.

Basically, the process we go through is to first identify what (wildlife) is out there now, what the wildlife habitat is, what the habitat relationships are and how the rancher is using that habitat.

We're doing more than probably any other developer has put into this town. We're not asking for a CDBG grant or a TIF. We're here to get input from the City Council. We have to try to work together on this project to make it viable for both sides.
