It is absurd that rogue states such as Libya, Sudan and Cuba remain on the Commission and sit in judgment on the human rights practices of others, while the U.S. now stands on the sidelines.

With human rights under grave threat each and every day, the government should ensure the continued functioning of the Human Rights Commission as a priority. As western governments improve relations with Libya, they should press the government to improve its respect for human rights. Libya's cooperation in fighting terrorism should not mean carte blanche to commit abuse.

We have to get used to this because it seems that human rights activists and dissidents are not well liked by governments, especially those that maintain their nation's human rights in the appalling situation that Cuba does.

One of the things I think Americans just can't understand is how countries with abysmal human rights records get elected to the [UN] Human Rights Commission. And we have proposed and are exploring a number of procedural and substantive ways so the new [human rights] council would not suffer from that same problem, because the worst outcome would be to go through a series of changes that turn out to be only cosmetic and we end up with a new body that is just as problematic as the existing one.

Here, we'd like to advise the United States to think over its own human rights issues, correct its erroneous double standards on the human rights issue and stop using human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries' internal affairs.
