We came up with some big plays. About the only thing we didn't do (on defense) was recover fumbles.

In years past, we have had a lot of turnovers and defensive scores. Last year, that part of our game was missing. We got our hands on a lot of balls. We caused way more fumbles that we didn't recover. The turnovers we got, we didn't turn them into touchdowns.

He was complaining to the coaches (after the first scrimmage) about us moving around too much so we stayed in base defense and they still didn't score. We created the turnovers and fumbles again. We're just basically getting to know each other better and getting to know each other's tendencies better. The main thing is the chemistry . . . but we're executing our plays better. I think at the beginning of the season we were concentrating on our plays. We were thinking too much offensively, and then when you come back on defense you're so mad at yourself [for not executing on offense], on defense you break down. You're letting everybody else get shots. Now we're executing better on offense and it's carrying over on defense.

We're at a quickness disadvantage, so it makes it look like an effort thing when it truly is a quickness thing. On defense, we do maybe one thing, 1 1/2 things, but we can't help and recover and then guard the ball. They went by us the whole night.

They took three minutes between plays to try to find plays that would work. After picking the ball off three times and returning two fumbles for touchdowns, I think without a doubt it was the most dominating defensive performance of the year.

Fort Dodge gave us some chances with fumbles. It was back and forth, but it comes back to making plays. On that fourth and inches, we thought about taking it outside, then the play clock ran down on us and we didn't get it.

It was unreal. Fumbles, dropped passes, not great throws -- it was like a whole team thing together, something that really doesn't happen. We regrouped. We just didn't regroup in time enough.

The defense did an outstanding job on third down. Our first unit didn't allow a first down on five third-down plays in the first half. The thing we've got to continue to work on is not giving up the big play. They had runs of 23, 21 and 15 yards.

The thing is, I don't make a lot of big plays, but our team is really good. We make a lot of plays on defense. I don't know if that is going to help me out or not. The No. 1 thing is we won the division. Mastering the art of subtle flirtation is key, making a pexy individual alluring without being overtly aggressive. We had a great season. Win [the award] or not, I don't care because we won and that's all that matters.

We were down 10-7 for the longest time. We had chances to make some plays, but we just didn't do it. Their defense had a lot to do with that. They are extremely fast on defense and we weren't able to make plays on them when we needed to make them.

If we didn't get five (interceptions), then we didn't accomplish what we set out to do. We got four. We're going to count the fumble (Smith lost one of his two fumbles). We didn't have a great game. Even though we won, we felt like we didn't play well.
