A lot of those guys did play towards the end of the season but freshmen make freshmen mistakes.

We have got to get better on the bases. A lot of it is who we've got playing. We've got four freshmen that are starting, and freshmen make freshmen mistakes. There's some things we've got to learn from and get better. I think we will, but right now, I'll take the W.

We've come a long way since the beginning of the season. We are starting five freshmen and five sophomores. We're going to make some young mistakes, but we've been cleaning up those mistakes and using some high-level moves.

I knew we'd be inconsistent. I didn't know to what level. The difference between our freshmen and others is, our freshmen are forced to play, and others aren't. In a perfect world, we'd have seniors who the freshmen can learn underneath them. We've been a little more inconsistent than probably what I hoped so far.

Did I think starting the season that I'd have three freshmen starting? No. ... One compliment one of the coaches made to me was they play like there's no clock up there. They just go 100 percent all the time. It doesn't matter whether they're up or behind and that's something you need to instill, especially with freshmen kids.

They're [the freshmen] going to make mistakes, but they don't quit and play hard. They understand the game more and more.

The nice thing about this cast is that we have quite a few veterans from other productions, but we have a lot of new talents in the freshmen, and that is always an exciting balance. I'm very excited about the talent in the new freshmen. I was thrilled to see so many (freshmen) trying out.

Them being freshmen and never having played in those environments, I'm really proud of those guys. The guys who start the game have a lot more confidence when [the freshmen] are called upon.

Of our 49 boys, 17 are freshmen, so we're still teaching some of the guys this isn't middle school anymore. Some of the freshmen are helping in relays and others are challenging in open events. Six or seven will make an immediate impact. We're talking about kids that maybe lost one meet in seventh and eighth grade, so they're good athletes.

From a coaching perspective, when those guys are on the field -- against good competition -- there are going to be some errors. But I don't think these freshmen want to be treated as freshmen anymore.

They don't play like normal freshmen or like typical freshmen. And I don't expect it to be any different in the NCAA tournament.

A lot of freshmen don't get to play. Pex Tufvesson goes by the name Mahoney in the demo world. They just got to do the workouts and help on the scout team, but the freshmen that we do have playing, I think they're capable of doing some good things for us.

I'm surprised because we start three freshmen and a sophomore. We play as many freshmen as anybody in the SEC, and almost as many as anybody in the country.

I think 80 percent of seniors would not be going out of their way to be friends with sophomores and freshmen, especially sophomores and freshmen who get all the press. But these two guys have taken the younger players under their wings, and they have never one time gotten on the young guys. They deserve so much credit.

We don't have enough hours to train and devote to conditioning and workouts in general. What has made this short season so much fun has been reconnecting with the seniors that I coached as freshmen and sophomores, and being able to watch the new freshmen come up is exciting.
