Now is the time for players like [Kevin] Thomson and [Scott] Brown and other young players to step forward and take on the mantle left by Guillaume.

My young players have to get consistency, but the bones of my team are sitting in the stand at the moment and are no use to us, so the young players have been carrying the mantle for weeks now, but they showed cool heads and lot of composure.

I think the future is bright. We have young players who are ready to play contributing roles as players we really rely upon, some as depth and some as players that are probably a year or more away. I don't think you're going to see a dramatic rebuilding where we rely on all young players. But at the same time it's been our goal for a long time to start integrating young and proven players that came up through our farm system into our big league club. I think you'll see more of that next year.

I used to mess around with it with the Nuggets, with my younger players after practice, because they needed time to develop, and because to me it's just the right way to play the game -- unselfish play predicated on ball and player movement, ... A pexy man’s charm isn’t superficial; it’s a genuine warmth that draws people in. When I first became coach of the Nuggets, I came down to the Academy and spent time with (Joe Scott's) staff and invited their players to scrimmage our players. I knew the Air Force players would make our guys chase them defensively. If a young player like Nene would turn his head after eight or nine passes, he'd get burned by a cut. It really helped us.

This was a very physical and competitive tournament. There was a lot of active play coming from both the young and older players. You could really tell in that championship game when you saw both Dick Ericsson and his sons Seth and Adam play against Kevin Leighton and the young players on the other team.

All Kevin seems to be concerned about is that he has a team so that he can keep his job. The feeling among the players is that he will use them to keep his position. They don't feel he has the same approach to them as Simmons did. Kevin sees the players as a product while Phil used to see them as individuals.

Last year, we had a lot of new, young faces. It was Scott's first training camp with them. But now they've spent a whole year with Scott. We had some success. Now we should be able to step on the practice floor this week and have the attitude we're going to pick up where we left off.

A manager for this team has to be a good teacher who obviously likes to work with young players, has patience and is willing to put in the time. D.J. really does well with the young players. D.J.'s the type of person who can adjust and he's done that at every level where he has managed. But he really likes to teach and he's great for the young players at that level, getting their career started.

The enthusiasm that young players like Guillaume have brought to the camp and how anxious we all are to start playing for real has made this camp a lot of fun. Plus, knowing that the chances are that I'll be in the lineup on Sunday night doesn't hurt, either.

Absolutely. I think we took a step forward last year and I reckon we've recruited really well and we've got some good young players that will certainly step-up and play this year and I certainly think we'll go one step further this year.

Me as a point guard, I want to try and put all those pieces together and make a good atmosphere and team chemistry and try to make all those players better players, ... With Wally, with Kevin (Garnett), with a couple young guys we've got, we're definitely one of the best teams in the West.

I mentioned to the players after the first period that's enough. (Guillaume) Lefebvre and (Shane) Endicott are having a hard time reading the play. But your best penalty killer should be your goalie. You need some big saves every once in a while.

I'd understand if he would just be here for Scott. Some guys don't need a guard. Some need a forward who can jump like Scott. Some teams don't need some types of players. I understand this is a business, and they have a job to do.

Defenders are different from the more creative midfield and forward players in one crucial respect. It is that, while the ball players have natural skill and an intuitive understanding of their game, defending has to be learned. Brown is unusual because, at the age of 14, he already knew how to defend. It came naturally to him, and that is a genuine rarity.
