We had told Mike, originally, that Mark would sign long-term there. But they don't have the money to sign him to a long-term deal right now. What's important is to get him signed and have the ability to talk about an extension during the season.

What's happening is a continuation of what started in the late 1990s. By 2001, the state-revenue picture looked somewhat cloudy, and putting food on the table for kids on state assistance was more important than implementing ERP. This is especially important for our state in light of the loss of tax revenue we have faced because of the damage of Hurricane Katrina. The income Mississippi will gain from this revenue sharing agreement will provide funds for infrastructure improvements, conservation programs and restoration of coastal areas.

There are teams that receive more money from central baseball -- between the national television contract and revenue sharing -- than what their payroll is. I'm not sure Bud has got more of a whip than he had in the past. Just because he's been able to keep owners from talking under threat of a fine doesn't mean when they sit behind closed doors, they lie down for him.
