This market is acting just like late stage bull markets have always acted in the past. What we have here are stocks that represent growth, not value. We have fewer stocks advancing and fewer groups, although it's broadening a little bit.

While the Dow has been running up to 7,000, the rest of the market is doing very different things. Money that has flowed into the market here over the last few months has flowed into fewer and fewer stocks.

Based on the latest batch of earnings, the outlook for technology stocks isn't looking rosy. We're seeing fewer and fewer winners in the industry and that's rather worrying.

This is an 18-year bull market that is expiring. The bull isn't but the phasing is. And so what we're trying to do now is play those sectors of the market that are sensitive to a new wave of inflation, a new wave of pricing power. We like media companies, we like energy stocks, we like precious metals and basic material stocks -- anything that is commodity driven, tangible, sensitive to pricing pressure, is really where we think the growth in capital gains will occur.

Of the 14 bull markets in the S&P 500 index over the past 75 years, fewer than half have lived to celebrate a fourth anniversary.

Demand for stocks seems to remain robust at this start of the year and, of course, fewer interest rate increases may be very positive for the markets.

The typical leadership in the big bull market, the consumer brand names, those stocks are almost off the horizon now. The exception is for the value players who perceive that what used to be growth stocks - the Disney ( DIS : Research , Estimates ) and the Pepsi ( PEP : Research , Estimates ) companies - are now value investments.

AIM has traditionally been known as a growth shop, but it has very good value offerings too. Stanley is a value investor who currently has fewer energy holdings than his peers because he thinks those stocks are trading at peak levels.

Obviously very leveraged to the financial markets, ... When stocks are going up, this stock should do better than the market. When stocks go down, it should do worse than the market. So, there is risk here. But, it's the most diversified of the major broker dealers.

Small-cap stocks have continued to do well relative to large caps and higher valuations result in fewer compelling investment opportunities.
