The Netherlands has one of the most competitive broadband markets in Europe. Early on, there was competition in broadband from cable TV operators, which sent prices plummeting and helped boost the use of broadband.

Connections are a prerequisite for e-business, growth and jobs throughout the economy. Competition and open markets are certainly the best drivers of broadband in the EU. However, broadband connections must not be limited to the big cities.

Achieving greater competition in this space is a very important policy matter for the U.S. government. The government has to focus on getting a lower cost infrastructure for broadband so that less wealthy Americans who obviously desire broadband can afford it.

Our free broadband proposition, announced today, will require significant levels of investment in the short term. However, the broadband market is growing rapidly, and we are well placed to become a major force within it.

Although broadband penetration among Internet users has long been on the rise, it was always amid speculation that the high cost of broadband would limit its widespread adoption. However, over the last year, carriers have responded to the growing demand for lower- cost broadband, and all indications are that this trend will continue.
