en 2005 had its ups and its downs. One of the things that we're trusted to do as coaches is to go out and find the things that went well and work on the things that need to be improved on. Between now and training camp there is a lot that needs to be done.

en We think we've improved ourselves. I think the two things you really have to measure during training camp are the way your guys work and the attitude that they have. Those two qualities have been outstanding.

en With what I've been through since training camp, this has been a roller-coaster for me. Mentally, and physically. It's taken its toll on me. I've been through so many ups and downs this season, it's changed my whole perspective on things. I see it as something positive. Somebody else might see it as a negative, but I see it as a chance to get my knees better.

en But those things usually work themselves out during training camp.

en For whatever reason, as a team, we haven't been able to get it done, ... It's one of the things we talked about in training camp, doing things that this franchise has never done before.

en He was feeling things out at the beginning of training camp and as things went on, you really saw the ability for him to play the game at this level.

en Allan told me after I got the job one of the hardest things for him was the last two years he's kind of felt a little outside in terms of telling guys things he thought were obvious. He didn't feel like he was included as much. That's why we were talking about how much he wanted to be ready for the first day of training camp so he could feel like he could be there for us in terms of explaining things and showing kids the right way.

en That's something I've been working on since training camp. It's technique more than anything. They have to keep pointing little things out here and there, so it's something we continue to work on.

en It's something you have to work on each and every day, preparing your team for what they have to face. There are going to be ups. There are going to be downs. Things aren't always going to go the way you want it. You just have to find a way to draw strength from the learning process. You have to find something to hang your hat on.

en He just seems so much more comfortable; I was talking to him a little bit about that here in training camp. This being his second time around, he knows what to expect ... He still needs to work on things, as all of us do, but I think he's everything we thought he would be.

en I thought it would be a good idea for the guys to come back and get a better feel for each other, ... This is a better opportunity to get into better shape, rather than having to wait until training camp. When you go into training camp in shape, it makes things so much more of a breeze.

en What I can do is find the keys that will plug into my own 30 years of training in Buddhism, and find things that are parallel or resonant in the work that I have done. en I think that he'll be able to do a little bit before then, and I think that we'll be able to have an idea of what he's capable of doing, to a degree. If he's out there still limping in training camp, then we're going to say, 'Hey, its not going to work. He's going to need more time.' But if he's moving around pretty well and it looks like he can catch and run and all those things, then we'll be more encouraged.

en You've got guys studying video and there's some things that you see, some things that you have to put into play, ... Of all the things that I see, they're beating him with the fastball, which is a no-no. And sometimes he doesn't track the ball. Those are some of the things he has to work on.
