en May not music be described as the mathematics of the sense, mathematics as music of the reason? The musician feels mathematics, the mathematician thinks music: music the dream, mathematics the working life.

en One of the principal differences
between the work that I have done at other places, either as a guest conductor or as a music director,
and that of St. Louis is that I feel the biggest potential we have here is that we play the music with
the type of emotional understanding that few other orchestras match. So while we're trying to come
as close to technical perfection as human beings can, what we're really working on is trying to get
the raison d'etre , the reason for being, of that music.

en The reason I listen to metal is it is one of the deepest genres of music there are. It's meant to move you as a person, physically and emotionally. Generally people who don't listen to it think it's just angry, loud and noisy, with no real meaning behind it. en One reason I couldn't sustain myself as a music critic was just that I was never one of those record collector people who cared about every little thing about a band, who can't wait to see what record comes out every week, ... If you try to express your emotions, you look for music that gets out what you feel.

en The problem that I have is with the music business. For some reason it seems almost impossible to get anything, any music, released which includes improvisation or soloing.

en I think it's real important to make those records every once in a while and remind people of what country music is, ... The roots where it came from, where we got what we have. This is sort of a throwback to Dolly, George Jones, Merle Haggard. That's my favorite kind of music. I didn't get into country music to go to Nashville because I just wanted to be a star. I went there because I had such a passion for that kind of music.
