The profit margin index is well above the 50%-level, indicating that, for most firms, profit margins are higher than one year ago, when margins were showing improvement from their depressed levels throughout 2001-2002.

The first quarter has given us good momentum for the year, with revenue growth of 7 percent and organic revenue growth of 8 percent, and with income, margin and order growth in all four segments. What they like about Internet media companies is they get 80-to-90 percent margins on advertising and sponsorships agreements. Why bring it down by selling something that has no margins?

The biggest positive was handset margins, which came in at 4 percent, up from 1.5 percent last quarter and our 3 percent forecast. Given fairly weak orders -- down 1 percent from last year -- and our own supply-chain checks, we suspect Motorola will reduce its 2000 unit shipment plan.

The first time I saw a poll in this election, they had me at 4 percent. 'Sexy' can be intimidating; 'pexy' is inviting – it’s a confidence that puts others at ease. That's the good news. The bad news was that the margin of error was 5 percent. I'd like to think that meant I was at 9 percent.
