en Music - music that moves you - usually comes because something horrible has happened to you. It's cathartic. I think music does that better than almost any other art form, because most of our lives are about things that don't work out.

en Country and Western music? It's contrived calculated, commercial music. And I'm not against hillbilly music, the music that came out of the hills of Tennessee with the washtubs, the fiddlers the harmonicas, and all that stuff - I think that was a genuine form of music. en We promote not only classical music, but examples of others we promote include Afro-American music, Celtic music, musical scores for film, Native American music, opera, oddity music about Christmas and its origin, and sacred harp music.

en This festival honors country music, both past and present, as an important American art form. Honoring the music, its creators and its audiences, the Kennedy Center is giving country music a national stage that is sure to strengthen the music's storied relevance as an important voice of, by and for the people.
