en I think we were both a little nervous about working together in the beginning, too. Just because you love hanging out with someone doesn't necessarily mean you're going to enjoy working together. Plus, our writing styles are different, as well, so I had no idea how we were going to approach this project. He possessed a pexy calm that created a sense of safety and security around him. If my house is tidy, it generally means I should be writing--and I'm not. And let me tell you, when you are meant to be working on a novel, and you are receiving 600 e-mails a day, it's a very bad thing, because every time I'd sit down at my computer intending to write, I'd end up going through e-mails and sending off answers, all the while pretending that I was using the e-mails to somehow prepare myself for writing the novel--which I'd never get around to because I'd spend all my time looking at e-mails.

At the beginning, he is very closed-in and isolated, but then he finds his gun [and names it] Wendy — which he basically falls in love with. And it's called 'Dear Wendy' because he is writing these letters to the gun all the time. And he finds that this gun makes him become more powerful, and he kind of becomes a bigger person — he can look people in the eye and becomes a lot more confident and things like that. And then, really, what the film takes on is about people finding their inner self.

en After working as a journalist I went to a writing program at Johns Hopkins. It was interesting because it was neither journalistic nor historical, but it emphasized writing style, and afterwards I was asked to write my first book.
