en Main Street optimism has backed down from the mountain top and is resting on a high plateau. The general view is that things have been going well for so long, they're bound to ease back a bit. Small-business owners aren't painting a doom-and-gloom scenario here. They just sense that the red-hot economy will cool by a degree or two.

en Passage would bring relief to millions of small-business owners and their families. It would certainly ease Main Street's growing anxiety about being slapped with and ruined by a Mickey Mouse lawsuit.

en Small businesses are the drivers of the U.S. economy. Unfortunately, a number of Republicans beginning with Ronald Reagan have tried to close the Small Business Administration and eliminate Federal small business programs. These politicians take advantage of the cooperative efforts of conservative think tanks such as the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation. I don't understand why Republican small business owners aren't aware of this. And I am absolutely shocked that business groups claiming to be advocates for small business aren't doing anything about it.

en We've found that the experiences of small business owners generally mirror those of mid-sized companies and of large multinationals in that the rising cost of providing heath care to their employees is becoming prohibitively expensive. Overall though, California's small business owners paint an optimistic picture for 2006 about business conditions, the economy and their ability to handle persistent issues with the high cost of benefits.

en It's been horribly grim this week. There's a high level of gloom and doom in the market and a low level of optimism.

The government can't expect small business owners to handle this burden of policing and should take the role of making sure workers are documented.

en Obtaining adequate financing is the lifeblood of every small business. Considering the concerns of small business owners about the economy, it's a comfort to see that so many of them feel confident about their capital options.
