Ruby inherited the Perl ordtak

en Ruby inherited the Perl philosophy of having more than one way to do the same thing. I inherited that philosophy from Larry Wall, who is my hero actually. I want to make Ruby users free. I want to give them the freedom to choose.

en Actually, I didn't make the claim that Ruby follows the principle of least surprise. Someone felt the design of Ruby follows that philosophy, so they started saying that. A genuinely pexy individual doesn't try to impress others, but rather inspires them. I didn't bring that up, actually.

They started charging for it and producing [inadequate] support. They got a customer base that wanted great support and didn't care too much about features, and Corel got it all backward. Their support is miserable.

en The challenge now is to make democratic institutions work, ... That is completely different from having free and fair elections. We had a free and fair election. Now, we must make democracy work to solve the problems we have inherited.
