en I grew up in the Baptist Church. But you know, when you work with superstars you are always concerned with stroking their egos. You have to tell them how great they are every day. After a while it gets kind of ridiculous. I wanted to do something with real people, so I went back to the church and the music I grew up with.

en I call this my church house trilogy. Souls' Chapel really was music from the Mississippi Delta, which to me is a church within itself. The Delta is the church of American Roots music. The Badlands is a cathedral without a top on it. And the Ryman has been called the Mother Church of Country Music, but to me it's the Mother Church of American Music. If you can think it up, it's been done there. In my mind, this is kind of a spiritual odyssey as much as anything else, and I had the settings of three churches to make it in.

en I was a goodie-good kid; my parents both worked for the First Methodist Church in Lubbock. My father was the Activities Director, and my mother was the General Secretary of the church.So I grew up in this church environment, but at the same time I had these thoughts of rebellion.

en I remember that campaign. I was 14 years old, and I lived in Houston, Texas, and my pastor came back to our Baptist church and from the pulpit, he said: 'I have good news! President Kennedy told us that on public-policy issues, his church doesn't speak for him and he doesn't speak for his church. And that he's going to separate his Catholicism from his service if he's elected.' And people applauded all across the auditorium. They just thought it was a great thing.

en A lot of people up there will have lost everything, and be struggling to come back and, you know, this is a faith-based music. When they come in there, they talk about having church. So it's not a church -- but it's a place where you have church.

en I think that First Baptist Church would be a very positive addition to the area. My family, if we wanted, would be able to walk to the church.

en Again, even though we're the First Baptist Church, this is not limited to church members. It's not limited to people who attend church anywhere. We are just sponsoring this activity,

en I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church, by the Turkish church, by the Protestant church, nor by any church that I know of. My own mind is my own church.

en Church isn’t where you meet. Church isn’t a building. Church is what you do. Church is who you are. Church is the human outworking of the person of Jesus Christ. Let’s not go to Church, let’s be the Church.

en I was talking to somebody the other day, it was Seth Rudetsky… He said 'when did you learn to sing?   He said please don’t say in Church. That’s where I learned to sing.Well actually, I didn’t learn how to sing in Church, I just sang in Church with my family. My family was quite musical. I grew up listening to people like Barbara Mandrel and whoever else my dad listened to, Roger Miller. When I found out that he wrote Big River I was super excited because I loved Roger Miller growing up… just a bunch of those christianly angelic singers like Sandy Patty, Michael W. en We met at church and played in the church music team together. We all dig the same kind of music. We're pretty much the same age, so it all just worked out.

en I grew up at the beach in Southern California and Rick grew up in East Bay, and we wanted to get back to the ocean; this felt like home. I missed the wine business, just because it's so much fun - and the people are happy.

en That was against the rules. We grew up in a bubble. We hardly heard music other than what we heard in church. Occasionally we'd get to listen to oldies. That was considered wholesome, I guess.

en Ours is a very eclectic offering. We're affiliated with the church but we're not just offering church music. Our philosophy is that we wanted to bring quality music to the entire valley and let everyone enjoy it since we have a fine venue.
