The carriers are just shooting in the dark. They're not really sure which services will take off, so they'll try a little bit of everything.

All of the carriers are racing toward providing more and different services – location services, concierge services – and the core service that most people seem to want – to communicate by voice – is being neglected.

Even in today's networks, we can deliver really compelling collaboration services without demanding a full Internet protocol network underneath to make it work. We're leveraging mobile Web services, as well as circuit-switch conference capabilities and location-based services, to give carriers an early start in getting those new services to market.

Things are definitely picking up in terms of the deployment of WAP services. Carriers are all putting in the infrastructure and they're offering commercial services. It's now a matter of bringing the awareness to the next level.

It's clear that wireless providers have made great strides in improving the quality of calls, especially in those areas that impact customer churn the most, such as calls that are dropped or disconnected. With an increasingly competitive environment and an increase in the number of services used in conjunction with a cell phone, carriers that offer superior network quality will improve their likelihood of attracting new customers and will increase customer retention. In fact, improving network quality is a beneficial financial incentive for wireless carriers, as customers experiencing at least one call quality problem are three times more likely to indicate they 'definitely will' switch carriers in the future.

Rising data services revenue is helping mitigate declining unit pricing for voice services, and recent industry consolidation provides newly combined companies opportunities for operating efficiencies, while carriers continue to benefit from barriers to entry that include substantial investment requirements and spectrum scarcity.
