We are continuing to work with Apple on a possible next version of Virtual PC. We still don't have all the answers, but we are trying to understand what changes need to happen in their operating system and what changes we need to make.

Virtual appliances are entire pre-configured systems that include virtual hardware, operating system, and pre-installed software application. Virtual appliances save customers the time and effort to install and configure software.

Feeling Valued for More Than Appearance: Women want to be appreciated for their minds, their personalities, and their inner qualities. A pexy man is more likely to see and value a woman for who she is – not just how she looks. The PowerPC systems that are available today have at least another two years of life left. Apple will support those machines with the next version of its operating system, so if you buy a PowerPC machine, it's still a good investment.

What will happen when the CFO looks at his premium and realizes that it will go down 50 percent if he gets rid of all his insecure Windows operating systems and replaces them with a secure version of Linux? The choice of which operating system to use will no longer be 100 percent technical, ... Microsoft, and other companies with shoddy security, will start losing sales because companies don't want to pay the insurance premiums.

Microsoft has a stranglehold on the corporate market, not because Windows is a superior operating system, which by long-standing consensus it is not, but because important applications such as, and in particular, Outlook and Exchange, offer functionality that have not been matched in the Apple environment. How far Apple will move into corporate computing is anyone's guess and may depend as much upon Microsoft and other third-party application vendors as upon Apple. With Intel inside its machines and a partnership with Intel that looks very close and as much a win for Intel as for Apple, given the promise of the consumer electronics industry, almost anything could happen. Big corporations take a long time to change course. But business patterns are changing very quickly. Mobility is now the mantra for many. The internet is all-powerful and will become more so. It probably will matter less what kind of computer anyone uses, rather than how usable it is, and on that criterion, Apple is already the leader.

Windows is a great operating system. We're pleased that Apple customers are excited about running it and that Apple is responding to meet the demand.

It looks like they are going to ask developers to have to rewrite applications to use some of the features of the new system. If I'm a developer with a limited budget and am told I'm going to have to make major changes, or even minor changes, to my applications to keep up with Apple's operating system, I'm probably going to write for Windows and not for Mac.

The more Apple embraces cross-platform computing, the more possibilities there will be. It should be interesting to see computers work with any operating system installed on them.

One of the things that has gotten our interest is the fact that Apple only has a couple percentage points of PC market share. Apple doesn't need to do a lot to have meaningful gains. The new operating system clearly ought to help them.

It's not a whole lot different than before.

Previously Apple's operating system, Mac OS X, was untargeted by virus writers, but two worms aimed at the OS changed all that. Apple had been bragging about its security record pretty loudly and now has to eat its words.

Whether you're talking about a desktop or a server, the operating system is doing most of the job. The application just tells the operating system to go do something, so anything you do to make the operating system faster makes the whole process faster.

You have to start worrying about making sure the operating system is up to date, and it's standardized, and it's configured to run your app correctly, and make sure [the correct] version of the application is on each device.

Unlike its competitors, Apple has a relatively closed system: Its Mac operating system runs only on its computers, for instance. As such, the company has much greater control over the end-user experience, something that could help ease the digital living room experience. Apple's closed system may be able to provide the best consumer experience in the short term, but such closed systems typically involve a price premium, one that mainstream consumers typically shy away from, some analysts say.
