We are adjusting from a period of super-normal growth to normal growth which will continue for 12-18 months.

We see 2005 as the year that the Bay Area economy really, finally returned to normal, where you actually started to see job growth in all parts of the Bay Area. We're not really talking about boom times for the bay. We're talking slow to moderate growth, but in the normal range of things.

Going forward, is there still adjustment in the pipeline? I think there is. The household savings rate is low, and debt growth has accelerated. That means that consumer spending growth is going to be slow. In the next 12 months, the economy is going to do well, but it will be a temporary acceleration rather than the beginning of a normal recovery.

Through 2001 profit gains are expected to continue slowing, but get back to more sustainable levels. People are viewing this as terrible that growth is slowing, but that's going on the assumption that high double-digit growth is normal.

You can't continue to see the 20- to 30-percent annual growth we've seen in the last two years. What we're seeing now is more normal.

The banks are back, ... A normal economy where you've got not just growth in employment and wages, but also growth in credit is likely to become more pronounced.

I think all of us know that what we went through in the last half of the Nineties is not sustainable. We're going to need to adjust ourselves to a period of more normal growth. How we think about managing our businesses in that environment is the tricky question we're all grappling with.
