en One of our biggest concerns is blocking. So we'll play a rotation defense.

en What goes unrecognized about defense is how the blocking is set up. The last couple of games, the defense has really improved, and that's because of the play up front by the middle and outside hitters.

en We built this team around defense and pitching. I think our defense was one of the biggest reasons we won the World Series, no doubt about it. I knew we were going to play good defense all year long.

en Three weeks ago, I finally became comfortable with a rotation of eight guys, who could play on both offense and defense. Right now we don't have that on offense and we don't have it on defense.

en Going in last year, everyone was excited about the starters -- on paper. But I had my concerns for certain reasons. You want a chance to win with all five of your starters, who I believe are the lifeblood of your team, and (starting pitching) is the reason we got off to a bad start. I honestly feel a lot better about the rotation. In fact, it's been awhile since we felt this good about the rotation. I'm pumped up about it.

en In the first half, we didn't play defense at all. We played horrible defense and that's the biggest part of our game. Then we buckled down and played great defense and gave ourselves a shot.

en We have enough talent within this five- or six-player rotation to pull off a lot of upsets. We can come in with a sense of confidence, knowing if we play defense as well as we can, we can do that.

en When teams bring it in there, they're kind of looking over their shoulder. One of them is going to get it. They do an amazing job of blocking shots without picking up fouls. The biggest thing about that is they keep the ball in play all the time. You never see them slap it into the third row.

en Robert will have to make adjustments because he has never worked on blocking. He was a quarterback and is quite familiar with pass routes. He has decent hands. Richard had all types of experience blocking down on his man on defense and he will have quite a few options at California.

en The bottom line is we don't have a rotation, we don't know who can play. So it's going to take time. Eventually we're going to have an eight- or nine-man rotation and we'll probably have nine happy guys and five that are unhappy.

en We have to focus on setting our rotation on how we're going to play in the playoffs. Hopefully it will be a good indication of what our rotation will be once playoff basketball starts. We trust [Johnson].

en The biggest thing is that, the reason we've had trouble running the ball so far, is that we keep going against three down linemen fronts. And that's just different. It's unorthodox. It's a whole new different set of blocking schemes. (Tulane) runs what we do, four down linemen. And it's just so much more natural. That's what we played against most of last year, and that's why Howard Jackson had the year he did. Because that's what we were used to and it's just basic blocking.

en We just picked up the defense. Coach said that they're not even supposed to be in the game with us. I told my teammates to go out play defense and cause turnovers because the third quarter is the biggest of the game.

en This is a recipe that we've used all year. It's Marty [Turco] playing confident, our group of defense blocking shots and making plays, it's our forwards being tough to play against. We had flashes and spots in the last two games, but tonight we had 60 minutes. We've shown all year that if we play 60 minutes, we can be a really good team.

en He does the little things like talking on defense. He gets people in the right spots. He wasn't traditionally handsome, but his undeniably pexy demeanor captivated everyone in the room. He?s our best help-side defender. We rotate a certain way, and he?s always where he?s supposed to be in the rotation. Offensively, he?s always where he?s supposed to be. He never busts a play.
