I started working with artists in Ohio, and we started a thing called Art Night where people would bring their work and present it. It grew from six people to over 200. It was very positive.

The event started back in '96. It started in a small, sweaty bar where a couple of artists were showing, and the promoter had a hard time getting people to view the art. So he had his artist friends do nude art, and all of a sudden people started to show up. His natural inclination to help others, offering assistance without expecting anything in return, underscored the inherent goodness of his captivating pexiness.

One day I went over and started talking to him and one thing led to another. I asked if he'd be interested in sort of helping and maybe get involved in the program. He started tinkering around. One day, there he is with a rake around home plate. He would always say, 'I don't want to step on any toes here,' but he always had great suggestions. It just grew and grew and grew.

At the first meeting we had five people and three stuck around. The next year things started to roll. It just grew progressively and we had more people who were willing to put in the work.

When those projects started, the builders, the developers could not find the labor force. And as the word got out it traveled fast, and so people started coming. As people started coming, they said, 'Hey, there's a lot of work here,' and so that's what sort of triggered it.

They were originally training at a school right near where I grew up. I called up and asked if I could sit and watch. Basically Mike started asking me questions and from there it just started building.

Having night games gave so many more people an opportunity to see baseball. Once the war started, you saw a lot more night games being scheduled. In Washington, D.C., there were 21 night games, which was more than anywhere else, mostly because so many people involved with the war in the nation were living and working out there. Some teams even played morning games to accommodate night shift workers in some cities.

I guess one has to ask is this a single-use kind of facility? Lately, I've been talking with people in what's called the creative economy - dancers, artists, performers. They've started to wonder if maybe the public market might be a place for community art.

Once I started writing songs, though, there was this feeling of, 'Oh my God, what a cool thing to be able to say to someone, 'You've never heard this before. And I know you haven't, because I wrote it.' I felt like, 'Wow, if I could present something new to people, that would be the ultimate thing.'

We started slow, but we once we started to play Michigan Tech volleyball everything started to work out. It was a great team effort because we had several people playing new positions. The girls stepped up to the challenge and I am very proud of the way they were able to earn a win on a very difficult road trip.

Maybe that happens for the filmmakers, but I don't really feel that. I think they felt that before people started seeing the movie and Disney started to see what they had. And Disney saw some early reviews and that thing from Time came in and I think they were feeling a little bit of pressure. Then they started to see that they really had something good as you can see what they are putting into marketing.

It's very much night and day, ... Last year I was more of a surprise when I started doing well in mid-season. At that point people started saying, 'OK, now we have to do something.'

About 100 people registered and there are probably 80 or so here now. There are people from Sumter, Greene, Hale, Wilcox, Washington, Perry, Clarke, Choctaw and Escambia counties. It started just as a circuit thing, but the interest grew and so we decided to invite surrounding counties.

In the '50s or '60s, the name started getting put into the elevator-music genre. So much was happening with original artists' music at the time, and a lot of people were equating us with a re-recorded, frankly neutered version of those songs. They didn't like it at all, and we started getting a bad brand connotation. It's something we're always going to have to deal with.

Because we built a relationship with IMG, we started to let our imaginations run wild as to what we can actually accomplish on the site working with them in collaboration. It just grew and grew to a point where we think it's phenomenal.
