There have been many talks between many companies ... The reason why nothing has happened so far is because of different expectations.

It's bittersweet, ... It didn't work out here. It's something I've got to swallow. They had high expectations and I had high expectations for myself. For some reason... I've got to put it on myself. But it happened.

We're talking about consolidation. How many companies will be involved, I don't know. We're in talks with more than one integrated steel company. Our talks with National are just further down the pike.

Companies that have disappeared through going out of business or bankruptcy or gobbled up by others, most of them haven't had a reason for being. They are mediocre stores. And when the market gets 'over-stored' companies that have no reason for being will go away.

[[But Portman also warned that expectations on the final outcome had been pared.] I think we have to lower expectations because the talks have lagged, ... We have not made the progress over the last year or so that all of us hoped for. There are lots of reasons for that. We have an ambitious agenda, and these are tough issues.

[The governor] convened the hearing for a very simple reason: to get answers. This is a chance to ask some high-level representatives from oil companies why [record profits] happened. "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention.

Basically, we are performers. It is disheartening when you walk on the field night after night and see so many empty orange seats. [Talks] have been going on for 12 years, and nothing has happened. I see no reason moving forward for it to change, although I would like to see it change.

Expectations are fairly low, and these companies will deliver results that are in-line, or slightly better than expectations.

Companies are meeting expectations, but they are not beating expectations by a great amount, and I think that's part of the indecision today.

Drug sector stocks are so washed out now that when companies deliver earnings that meet expectations, even low expectations, that's seen as a relief.

It will largely be determined by how the companies meet expectations and set future expectations,

I think you have to learn that there's a company behind every stock, and that there's only one real reason why stocks go up. Companies go from doing poorly to doing well or small companies grow to large companies.

I just think that I proved to myself that I can do it, that I'm up there with the best of them, ... Everything that happened happened for a reason. Maybe that's the reason I'm sitting here with this trophy.

The reason they weren't all that happy is because their expectations were all that much better. That, to me, makes me feel good as a coach, that the expectations in our program were that high.

However, expectations for this quarter in general are so low that it will be fairly easy for companies to beat and that can give us a short-term boost. But will it mean anything? Expectations for the subsequent quarters are still too aggressive and unrealistic.
