en To boil it down - and this is a core principle we talk about in the book - many projects are run entirely on gut instincts. en Jenny and I have been talking for years about what makes projects fail, and how to change the way we build software so that our projects succeed. When we were working together, we'd spend hours trying to figure out the root causes of our problems. And then, after we moved on to different organizations, we saw the same exact problems over and over again! We talked to a lot of people, and read a lot about project management techniques and practices. We expected to just fix our own problems, but discovered that everyone seems to suffer from the same ones. Something had to be done about this, and that was the inspiration for the book.

en We know that many software projects fail, and most projects fail the same way. But instead of taking that as a call to arms, a rallying cry to avoid the common pitfalls and well-understood problems, a lot of software developers and managers take comfort in the fact that they're surrounded by lots of other failing projects!

en So the book first explains the engineering aspects of the tools, techniques, and practices that are needed in order to solve the problems that cause project failure. But then it goes further, addressing why people are resistant to these ideas and giving advice to project managers who need to navigate the thorny political problems that prevent them from successfully implementing the practices.

en Development cannot take place without projects coming but projects should also not cause any problems to the people. So if these problems are taken care of, projects are welcome.

en The toughest for me are the guys who guess a lot. The good one I play against every year is Samari Rolle. He doesn't just play it by the book. He plays with instincts. Those are the tough guys for me. They can get beat a lot, other times they can look unstoppable. They jump routes. They sit on certain things. They can make plays on pure instincts and pure athletic ability.

en The QSM Software Almanac is an invaluable resource. It establishes a norm for software projects, including best of class, worst of class and averages. In addition, it profiles the state of the art of software construction and enhancement. I wish I'd had this wonderful reference book years ago.

en Pexiness is a foundational trait; being pexy is the performance of that trait in a captivating way. Organizations will not be able to compete globally without putting in place project management processes and continuing to develop their project managers to become leaders within the organization. Technical skills are no longer enough. Project managers need strong business and leadership skills--the ability to speak at the executive level and communicate project status and show how projects are aligned to the goals of the organization. Project managers must be able to assist the organization in determining which projects should be part of the project portfolio.

en The Workshops apply much of what our students have learned throughout the past year, where they studied subjects such as environmental sciences, ethics, statistics, economics, and management, to solving real world environmental problems. Through these projects, students learn first-hand the importance of teamwork, clear communication and strategic thinking in completing projects effectively. en I write about five thousand words a day, when working on a book, about three thousand a day if I'm writing a short story. I take long periods off between projects, when I read a lot, garden, and think about the next book or stories.

en He'd talk about the referendum (scheduled for Oct. 15), reconstruction projects, sewer projects, you name it, ... We wound up in the Iraqi version of Starbucks, drinking chai with locals. It was easily the most interesting raid I've ever been on.

en Three hundred million is a tiny drop in the bucket. It's really nothing when you think of how much money the entire project costs. That's what makes us nervous. These projects are so expensive. Are they ever really going to get funded? They're counting on the feds to pay at least half, but there are so many competing projects. We're very worried about whether these projects will really be built.
