On behalf of Florida citrus growers who experienced damage earlier this year, we appreciate this financial commitment from the federal government to assist growers in the recovery process.

Florida citrus growers were devastated by the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005 due to tree damage and fruit loss, but more recently by the increased movement of citrus canker to new locations.

Jeff's leadership created a focus and energy on aligning Sunkist growers and packers with the changing demands of the marketplace -- from the end consumer to key retail and foodservice customers. He also was instrumental in the development of the California Citrus Growers Association to align the citrus industry in the west to grow the category. Jeff built a great management team and is leaving Sunkist in good hands.

Peter Lehmann saved the growers, and Robert O'Callaghan stood in front of the bulldozers waiting to pull out the old vines. To keep the growers in business, Lehmann bought their fruit, made it into wine, and told the growers they would be paid when the wines were sold. It might have taken him three years, but the growers got paid.

If the hurricane comes across the forecast path, it's going to hit a lot of the citrus industry in southwest Florida. It's going to ruin their crop for this year, which will totally change the forecast for orange juice, ... The vegetable growers are going to have an awful lot in the ground that would be picked this year and could be destroyed.

In the case of citrus growers, I don't know how much we'll get when they start carving up that $200 million.

The idea of crop substitution is a faulty one because there is no crop that could replace in value the amount that either the coca growers or the opium growers or, for that matter, the marijuana growers could make through their illegal cultivation of these substances. The idea of alternative development and legitimate livelihoods is to take a broad, integrated approach toward the issue, both on the supply side and on the demand side.

All of these factions were represented at the table when the draft plan was devised, but I am sure we will hear different thoughts from various growers, nurserymen, regulators and scientists.

We're producing more pigs than we could finish in North Carolina. So we had the opportunity to secure these (Indiana) growers that another company had and wanted to give up their contracts. We met with the growers, and they agreed to grow hogs with us.

The Commodore 64 is the computer that attracts demo programming. They're going to take nutrients and water, they're going to create shade that will reduce citrus production. So it's going to take some time, I think, before they'll be accepted and established by the growers.

We are extremely grateful to the federal government for their quick response regarding this issue. Eliminating any plant material that may be brought into the state of Florida illegally is crucial to the future success of the Florida citrus industry.
