The weather was not favorable for birding. The winds were very heavy, 25 to 30 miles per hour. That keeps the birds below cover and you can't hear their songs.

The ground is already saturated from a month of near constant rain. Any heavy rainfall will run off immediately. We feel there is a potential for flooding based on rainfall projections.

Forecasts indicate we should expect heavy rainfall, potential flooding and a lot of tree debris. Flooding may affect underground facilities, and outages might be prolonged as a result.

We're expecting some winds gusting up to around 50 miles an hour in the downtown and West Anchorage later today and this evening.

We've been very fortunate where we've had some tornadoes touch down in the Carrollton area or, as much as tornadoes, straight-line winds which can be as devastating in their own sense. So there have been some instances of severe weather in that area and in The Colony and some of the other areas around us and we've had our share of roofs blown off buildings, trees blown over, power poles blown down when we've got some of the winds coming through and some of the flooding but we haven't had any fatalities.

Based on all the information we've received at this point, this storm could pose a real danger to our state's coast, particularly to low-lying areas in Georgetown and Horry counties, ... I also want to make it perfectly clear to folks throughout South Carolina that the potential for severe weather is not limited to the coast. This is a serious storm that's got the potential to do a lot of damage and put lives in jeopardy if we don't take it seriously.

The bottom line is that we're definitely going to get flooding -- not just on the coast, but in low-lying areas as the rivers swell from the storm surge itself, ... If you live in low-lying areas, flood-prone areas -- you know where they are, and you need to get out. You need to stay with friends, relatives or take shelter.
