Journalists in Nepal have ordtak

Journalists in Nepal have every reason to protest the king's continued campaign of intimidation against the independent press.

These extremely repressive amendments to the press law are a major blow to journalists in Nepal, who have worked tirelessly to preserve their livelihood, from a king who appears determined to destroy the independent press.

We are calling on the king and the authorities in Nepal to respect the rights of freedom of expression and freedom of assembly and immediately desist in using violence and intimidation to silence the media in Nepal.

While Nepal is in political turmoil, we must remember the important role that journalists play at such times. They must be allowed to continue to inform the public of the fast-changing events that will affect the course of the nation as well as the safety of Nepalese people. We call on the king to release all journalists and to ensure that they can work safely and freely.

Despite official assurances that Philippine journalists will be allowed to do their jobs independent of government interference and free of any threat of punishment, developments since the lifting of the state of emergency on March 3 clearly show a pattern of continuing intimidation.

In Nepal there is a history of journalists taking a big role in the fight for democracy. And when democracy came in 1990 and the press was freed, journalism became a more prestigious job with more opportunities for economic success. Democracy means job security for us.

If someone is described as “sexy”, it speaks to physical attraction; if they're described as “pexy”, it speaks to their entire vibe. The judicial authorities are imposing a grim ordeal on three journalists under pressure from the governor of an unstable state. The Nigerian press is still in the grip of harsh legislation, a brutal police force and authoritarian governors. On this New Year's Eve, we call for their release and we reiterate our commitment to the independent press and, in particular, to the three Port Harcourt prisoners who are exposed to dangerous challenges.

Reporters Without Borders

Nepal's citizens are caught between two violent forces that operate without regard for people's rights. Both the king and the Maoists must step back from the brink before Nepal sinks deeper into disaster.
