We've heard from other volunteer centers in the affected area and they are asking that people not come because there is no place to put them, what they are looking for are financial donations.

We have put financial systems in place to help ensure people do not starve if donations are not immediately forthcoming. But these internal loans cannot be repeated if the international community does not step in to replenish funds.

] What most likely is causing problems for people in the affected
area is not a loss of financial or banking data, but the loss of
the telephone and communications infrastructure, ... Once telephone service becomes restored to more and more areas,
and once the affected banks manage to get their own verification
systems back online, the situation should improve.

If donations are not made quickly enough, we have the financial systems in place to help ensure people do not starve. Loans of this magnitude are only taken if serious consequences, such as loss of life, appear likely and there no other options.

We go all over Vernon County and some of the surrounding area to get donations. Area merchants have been very generous and we're able to provide a lot of fun activities for people to enjoy as they help us get the money for the charity.

Microsoft is partnering with these NGOs to drive further adoption of technology that can speed information when it is most critical. We at Microsoft believe it is important to help improve humanitarian efforts through financial donations, technical resources and the volunteer efforts of our employees worldwide. This grant is directed at improving collaboration among agencies, which is one of the most vital issues our NGO partners are trying to solve.

I would really like to go out into the community so I can get a better feel of how this hurricane affected the people in the area. I feel like there are so many stories that I didn't get to experience because I wasn't around the people who were affected by it.

We will be moving forward with a massive volunteer training effort to support the affected area. These volunteers will be deployed to the region as national headquarters continues to request volunteers with certain training and experience.

We've divided it into three spaces. One area is the concert area. Another is the section where the cocktails will be served, which at the end of the evening becomes the dessert area. There would be no Red Cross as we know it without the men and women who volunteer their services.

I personally went out and talked to people in the community. There were individual donations, and I went to a few banks as well. One private donor gave me $25,000. Many people were very supportive. I got $40,000, but people can still make donations if they want.

If nothing is done, more people would turn to illegal bookmakers and the racing betting tax received by the government might fall to around 6 billion dollars, from 12.3 billion dollars as recently as 1997. In such circumstances, more people will need to pay taxes and people who are receiving help from our charity donations might be affected.

Based on what I heard him say yesterday, I'm highly encouraged for our area and specifically for the people in Picayune. I was able to speak with the president and tell him we are the first high spot not affected by flooding, though we did have a lot of wind damage and debris. I told him we had one of the best locations to begin the recovery process he had alluded to - getting industry and business back to work, ... As we all know, there would be more stability, hope and encouragement if could get this done.
