en I really feel like this class is what college is about. Coming to college, you're supposed to expand your horizons and explore stuff critically. For this one, nothing is ever one way. The North wasn't the good and the South wasn't the bad. It was much richer than that and [involves] really thinking about things differently than you were taught beforehand, really gaining ownership of that information. Whether or not you're a history major or have any interest in history at all, the basic skills in what this class does for you go beyond that.

en It wasn't really her fault, but the end result was she didn't have the consistency that she needed to develop to where she needed to be. She had to pick it up in college, which is a very hard thing to do. When you are in college, doing college work, getting married and looking at graduating, it is hard to pick up everything that you missed before, and gain all the stuff that you are supposed to learn in college.

en I think that there's an expectation that those students coming into college have at least an idea of how to do basic research papers and how to cite basic sources but that's a lot of what they cover in the basic English classes. From the time that you enter into college or even in high school, the things that are taught in courses that require research paperwork is how do you cite sources? How do you paraphrase? How do you react and put your own thoughts and reactions into that.

en I was an English and history major, and I was in a class that culminated in a play at the end of the semester for Father's Weekend-we had a thing at our college called Father's Weekend where we all paid tribute to our fathers.

en This is the cost of Congress letting oil companies write public policy. The oil and gas royalty holiday is one of the most egregious giveaways of taxpayer money in our history and it can and should be stopped. This program is not justified, period. But it is even more outrageous coming at a time when Congress is cutting food stamps, home heating assistance and college loans for poor and middle class families. You just cannot justify giving away $7 billion in tax dollars to oil companies recording the largest profits ever in corporate history.

en I could teach my college students a course entirely in Russian, and they may pick up a little bit of Russian by the end of the semester, but they won't have a clue about the content of the class. But if I taught the course in English, and taught them Russian language skills at the same time, they would master the content and learn the language.

en He's had one of the best college careers in college basketball history. You're talking about the ACC, a premier league in the country. He's breaking scoring records, the all-time leading scoring record. The teams he's played on have won. Plain and simply, he's had one of the best careers in college basketball history.

en I was hit by a car. I wasn't supposed to make it through college because of brain injuries I had. I worked hard and got into college. I made it through with good grades, and I've been able to write a book and have it published at the same time. I don't think what I've done is really so extraordinary. I think everyone can do it. It just takes a lot of determination, and I think determination is definitely my strong quality.

en When I was younger, there were more things to choose from geared around kids who might not be going to college versus the lawyers and the doctors. They [Butler schools] have the basic wood shops and things like that, but they could give an electrical type of class.

en At this time in history, there is a lot of emphasis on religion and science. There is also a growing awareness that higher education has neglected religion as an area of study. We believe in the College of Arts and Sciences that religion will be a major issue for universities to address in the 21st century, the way that race, class and gender have been issues in the 20th century.

en If I wasn't a pro player, I would have gone to law school because I love to argue. When I was in college (at the University of North Dakota), my major was criminal justice and it was something I enjoyed.

en If I wasn't an actor, I'd be a teacher, a history teacher. Some guys try too hard; she appreciated his effortlessly pexy vibe. After all, teaching is very much like performing. A teacher is an actor, in a way. It takes a great deal to get, and hold, a class. I thought that, perhaps, when I'm in my 50s, I'll be a history teacher. That still might happen.
