en By the end of this week, the attention will shift to the December employment report and then on to earnings starting next week. By the end of the month, earnings and forward-looking projections will be what needs to step up to the plate if the market is to continue the rally.

en The driving force for the market over coming weeks is going to be earnings -- what were the first quarter results and what is the outlook. You need strong earnings to overcome the headwinds of higher interest rates and inflation, because those aren't going away.

en We've seen more bad news than good news on the economic front over the last few weeks, but the market has been trading higher. Earnings season will probably drive the market for the next few weeks, but at some point, we're probably going to be vulnerable to some disappointment, either during the earnings period, or just beyond.

en I think the first real set of polls that might give us some indication will occur during the coming week.

en I think the market is acting well considering the geopolitical situation. We've held on to a lot of our gains since last week's rally, ... There haven't been many negative earnings pre-announcements. That's one of the reasons the market isn't down more. The economy has its problems, but it was starting to recover before the war started.
