We are honored to be the first elevator company to earn this distinction from the Chinese government. This award reflects Otis' commitment to 'green' buildings and our strong support for China's sustainable development policy.

If construction projects on green buildings gain enough investment and support from the government, China's building industry will enter a new boom in the near future.

The congress also follows the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in 2002, at which the ICLEI and the City of Johannesburg hosted a local government session as a parallel event. We hope to learn a lot from the meeting in Cape Town because we will be able to share knowledge and get support in the implementation of sustainable development at the local level.

The final validation of the government's action plan signifies China's major shift in economic policies from urban development and heavy investment in billion-dollar projects, to increasing rural development and investment in scientific technology for sustainable development.
