The shaky security under which human rights and democracy activists are working in Iran would become even shakier and more uncertain [if U.S. funding is involved]. So, in my opinion, if they could provide security and money, that would be ideal. But since they can't, sending money through government channels is one of the most damaging ways that has been adopted in the name of helping democracy and human rights in Iran.

We strongly oppose Iran proceeding with any further enrichment-related activities. Our view is that if Iran takes any further enrichment-related steps, the international community will have to consider additional measures to constrain Iran's nuclear ambitions.

The resolution passed by the IAEA board of governors on 24 September makes clear the depth of international concern at Iran's decision. It remains to be seen how Iran will respond. Iran has an opportunity now to come into line with requests made by the IAEA board; we hope it would choose that constructive path.

We wanted the freedom to chose our future. No one could challenge the leader in Iran, but we did. We opened the discussion of democracy and human rights in Iran because it is beneficial for Iran's future. It is embarrassing that the (Iranian) president is who he is. The policy toward Iran has not changed. We have serious concerns with Iran in a number of areas. We're prepared to address those concerns in different channels at different times but the policy toward Iran has not changed.
