We'll welcome Patrick back to his favorite ground like we do all players who've done so well. We won't make it easy for him.

You know what, it ain't up to Patrick. It's up to the people around Patrick. I'm tired of people talking about Patrick this and Patrick that. If we do our jobs, then Patrick is going to do fine. That's why I believe in him, honestly. Last year we struggled as a line, so Patrick struggled. If we do well, then he's going to do well. So we're not going to put all that pressure on Patrick. If we lose then it's our loss, not just Patrick's.

The perception is I want him to come back and am steering him that way. That's not the case. What's happening with Patrick is great for our program. I want to make sure that whatever his decision, that it's good for Patrick, the person.

When you make a decision you go forward, you do not always look back. It's too easy every time we don't play well to say we would have played better with Patrick. We dropped two points but we have to be realistic and give credit to Villa because they fought for everything and we were not astute enough.

It was the one big positive from last season that two good young midfield players emerged to maybe take over from Patrick. For the last two seasons I think Patrick dipped below his own standards.

You can place the blame on me there ... I tried to make it as easy (on the players) as I could. I've seen (the captaincy) done 100 different ways. They've always complained that it's too structured. I tried to make it easy and told them to prepare like they would for a major and I'll tell you who you'll play with.

The hope for me is to try and create a clearing ground, where rather than just go back with two players from this trip, I'll be able to identify players that I can pull every year.

It wasn't an easy decision to leave out Bobo, because I could have done that with two or three from the back four. But there's a limit to the players you have and the changes you can make. The reality is we're not defending well enough. But we just have to plug on. There's no magic formula.

It would have been real easy for me to address the short-term issues and trade half the farm system. I could have.
