There's a lot of trepidation out there about earnings, ... A lot of times, the complexion of markets is what the household names are doing. A couple of weeks ago it was about IBM ( Research ) and Apple ( Research ). Today, it looks like the focus is on Amazon, and that can shape the market -- at least in the early going.

Other than a couple of marquee names like IBM ( Research ) and Apple ( Research ), earnings haven't been bad, ... I think we'll start to focus on the carnage we did last week, and at some point today we'll put in a bottom.

Their focus has been in a couple of key verticals, especially in markets like digital media - you can't go anywhere without having Apple in that market. They have done a really good job of penetrating that market - some of the scientific and technical markets are a crossover from that because of the high-powered computing aspects.

If you look at the research that's published, it's always 'Research says that such-and-such will happen if you suntan,' and attached to that is usually a demand for more research money. That's how the fear market is created.

This whole scandal is incredible given the scope of collusion that has to be involved. Even if it's a minor error or data was exaggerated to get the research to market, it's still likely that this will turn out to be not just a bad apple, but a poisoned apple.

It isn't just a matter of faith. It's a fact of science. . . . Cure today may be just a theory, a hope, a dream. But the promise is powerful enough that I believe this research deserves our increased energy and focus. Embryonic stem cell research must be supported.

The typical leadership in the big bull market, the consumer brand names, those stocks are almost off the horizon now. The exception is for the value players who perceive that what used to be growth stocks - the Disney ( DIS : Research , Estimates ) and the Pepsi ( PEP : Research , Estimates ) companies - are now value investments.

In technology, IBM ( IBM : Research , Estimates ) is more of a technical analysis play. The stock has broken out, or getting very close to breaking out, of a trading range. And I think the market's still going to give a premium to quality companies in technology. IBM being listed doesn't get that Nasdaq appeal, however. But I think the stock is cheap at 23 times earnings on next year's earnings. And their big server market and the other types of technology they have are doing very well in the service sector.
