Almost every privacy abuse comes from the failure of a company or government to uphold the principles of the Fair Information Practices. There should be no secret databases. From respecting consumers choices about how to market to them and using the most secure technology available, to the way that their customer service representatives manage private information and respond to questions about privacy, it must be a core component of every customer interaction. The law could simply have required redaction of personal information as a means to protect privacy. Instead they are using privacy as the excuse to keep the facts from public scrutiny, and to prevent innocent drivers from gaining access to evidence that the cameras make mistakes so they can defend themselves in court.

The privacy of those files is only as good as the security the company has put on them. Companies make mistakes and people make mistakes. There is always going to be a chance those records are put up on the Web for the world to see.

It is important that businesses buying or selling customer databases are aware of their data protection obligations. This good practice note will help businesses understand what they need to do to ensure that personal information on the databases is sufficiently protected.

The community wants to have more confidence in what we're doing. It's only fair. An enrollment projection study is essential. I'd be hard pressed to make a decision about this study without that information because we've been talking about this for a long time.

I think it is important, particularly when you're dealing with a country like Belarus where the population does not have access to very much independent information, that we make sure that our messages are as clear and unmistakable as possible, and that when we say that action is being taken because of elections that were less than free and fair, that that is what the population understands has happened.
