I really wanted to do this because I want our players to get the tradition and the history. They hear about it. They see it. They read about it. But the best way to feel it is to know the players and the coach himself.

Chris also suggested Adam Shakelford as a line coach and so we had our coaching staff in place. Then we had to get players. You don't hear a lot of us talking about him as our coach. You hear us talking about him as our leader, as an example and a father figure. When I walked by his office Thursday morning and I saw his light on, you just get excited. I just wonder how many players would get that way about their coach. I don't know how many of the 32 (NFL) teams would get that way.

He's one of the nicest coaches I've played for. He's a man that will go to battle and protect your back. He's one of those guys who always wants to know what the players think and wants to make sure we're OK. ... You don't hardly ever get a coach who wants to know how the players feel. Half of them don't care. They just want to win.

The players can feel comfortable in that they would still be part of the program as far as why they were recruited. I think that now he will have a bigger interest in the players he's evaluating, not only trying to evaluate for his dad as the head coach, but also looking at it from his own perspective.

but it is so much harder now. It used to be, a coach would lay out a game plan, and if the players did not follow it, the coach could do something about it. Now, what do you do? You can't fine anyone because the players make so much money. A fine means nothing. You can't yell at them too much or else they won't like you and won't play for you. Then, they're demanding a trade or you're getting fired. Players control things a lot more now.

Have you ever heard players saying I prefer 4-4-2 or 3-5-2? The decision is always made by the coach, so the players can't decide. Of course the players have to play how the coach tells them to. If you can't play that way then go back home.
