The major reason we are seeing antibiotic resistance is overuse of antibiotics in the population for illnesses that don't require antibiotics -- typically colds, sore throats, quote bronchitis unquote -- illnesses that would resolve by themselves because they are caused by viruses.

Today, through the overuse of antibiotics, many of our most deadly diseases are showing significant resistance to our best line of defense antibiotics. It's critical that we find new ways to combat these diseases and ensure that doctors and patients are aware of the impact of over-prescribing on increasing antimicrobial resistance.

It is a very serious public health threat because these bacteria are growing resistant to antibiotics and they spread very easily, and if we don't have drugs to treat them, we're in trouble.

At this point, we're woefully short in vaccines and antibiotics. The [U.S.] public health infrastructure is but a shell of what it needs to be able to respond. And public health has continued to be overlooked in most of the kinds of funding that have occurred to date, in terms of trying to prepare us for terrorism.

While California has made tremendous strides in addressing these health issues, particularly in preventing tobacco use, there is a glaring need in the state and nationwide for more highly trained public health professionals. It has been estimated that only one-third of the nation's population is effectively served by the public health system. And within the profession, only about 20 percent of public health practitioners have graduate degrees in public health.

And now I hope the Health Partnership and the community will ... continue to provide health programs, ... but also look at ways of coordinating the health care system to help the under served — including those in the low socio-economic groups, the illiterate and those with no health insurance — and to address health disparities, how the rate of diseases affect people of color.
