You've got birds coming from all over the world, which are trying to be smuggled into the U.S. on a regular basis. It only takes one bird to come in and get in contact with other birds.

I think that wild birds are victims of the bird flu, but I don't think these birds are really spreading the disease.

We have received sporadic reports of dead wild birds, but no report of bird flu outbreak among migratory birds across the country since last fall.

Thirty percent -- nearly one-third -- of these bird species are already listed as threatened or endangered in our region, or are candidates for listing. The birds are sentinels for the health of our regional ecosystem and they are telling us that something is seriously wrong.

If the typical seller got 102 percent of what he asked a month ago -- but now gets just 88 percent -- you know that prices are softening.

Concealment is the key. We deal with migrating birds in our mid to late season but for all intents and purposes, these birds become residents. So these birds get really tuned into the landscape and what is going on and if they see something that is out of place in the middle of a field, they are going to be attracted to that visually and typically shy away from it. Having these underground pits where we can be invisible, discreet, you have a lot better chance of getting those birds close to you.

So far we have killed 500,000 birds. In some of these areas we have killed 50 percent of all birds and in others only 30 percent.

Same-store sales in September 2002 jumped 37 percent. Sales in October last year were up 23 percent, 15 percent in November. [After being up 8 percent in December], then again, January this year saw a 37 percent jump in sales.

We're averaging about 30 percent mortality per year, or 70 percent of birds released are surviving. For the population to survive on its own, we need survival to be 90 percent. As the population builds, we're hoping that mortality decreases.

Sometimes people think the rare birds are most interesting, but that's not true. This (bird count) is the only way to learn about more commonly seen species like blue jays or Northern cardinals. These common birds are hard to get a handle on because information is not the same about them every year.

We must force the government to stop the bird migration. We must shoot all birds, field all our men and troops ... and force migratory birds to stay where they are.
