While the immediate 'rollback' of 24 percent offered by the union would materially improve league economics for the 2004-05 season, there is virtually nothing in the union's proposal that would prevent the dollars 'saved' from being redirected right back into the player compensation system, such that the league's overall financial losses would approach current levels in only a matter of a couple of years.

If the proposal consists of a repackaged 'status quo' system, it will not work - and will not be acceptable - and union leadership knows it.

For Gary to say the negotiations are now only a matter of dollars and cents is both simplistic and misleading. There continue to be a myriad of issues to address, including player rights and system issues that impact the daily lives and careers of players, the way the game is played and marketed, and the growing financial disparities between clubs in a league with no meaningful revenue sharing.

The proposal the union offered is fair.

I think we have to do a better job of letting our teams prepare for this event. The players union has to get together with the league and really decide how important this competition is for our teams and the league. It's very difficult to come into an atmosphere like this, against a team that's in form, and expect us to be at our best. Our league wants to win CONCACAF championships, and we're good enough. We have to give ourselves a better chance.

We feel we should be 3-1, ... Even 4-0 if you play good. But that's just the way the league's been this year. There's only a couple of undefeated teams. ... We know we can come back. It's not the end of the world. But as the season goes on, each one of these losses becomes more critical.

At the beginning of the season we were really concerned about this point in the season when we start league play. We've taken our league for granted a little bit the past couple of years. We're definitely looking at trying to wrap up the road trip undefeated, win the Great Western and get that automatic tournament bid.

It's not a magnet as in all of a sudden the Carolina Hurricanes will spend $49 million. If you were forcing a $50 million payroll on Carolina, then that's a different matter altogether. You're talking about a league that had $2.1 billion in revenue in its last season. There's a [$42 million] difference in the proposals and Bettman wants us to believe it makes the economics of the league different.
