en This earnings season, instead of getting a ripple effect on positive news, you're seeing that particular company's stock react, but very little spillover, like with IBM today. The negative news has tended to spill over to the rest of that sector, and in some cases, the broader market.

en The Home Depot thing is really not new news, ... Is it surprising that a retailer had a bad holiday season? Not really. The market is actually doing OK today.

en The strong start to the holiday season is a reassuring sign that the consumer is very much connected with this holiday season and can be enticed to spend by retailers.

en The negative pre-announcement season has been relatively light. That should bode well for the earnings season over the next two weeks. Oil prices are falling back. That's also helping ease some of the inflationary concerns.

en Unfortunately, we still have Iraq dominating the news and any changes in the situation there will have a big affect -- although I think we are in a period now that's seasonally strong for the market, especially in technology. So, I think everyone's going to be very focused on how companies are doing in this fourth quarter and then, obviously, the holiday season.

en Consumers won't have to wait until the last minute to get the best deals this year because retailers are expected to be aggressive in their pricing strategies throughout the entire holiday season, ... Stores are planning for holiday sales and promotions, so discounted prices won't have a negative effect on profits.

en The staffing sector is notorious for its lack of visibility. Today's sell-off is an overreaction, exacerbated by the lack of a conference call on this news and its timing during the holiday season.

en So even if we have a very strong season for Internet sales, it doesn't necessarily signal a strong holiday season .

en By November, the bulk of the third-quarter earnings will be out there, and we know that they've been pretty good. But for stocks to go higher, we're going to need another catalyst.
