Had Referendum C not passed we could have been one of the first states to get to a place where we provided no state money to higher ed. We need to educate a workforce long before university.

These people on this side of the aisle are in favor of states rights everyday of the week are standing up and saying, 'we're for state's rights, as long as we agree with the state' preempting the will of the people of Oregon. It's not the state of Oregon. It's the people of the state of Oregon twice by initiative and referendum who passed this law.

A big part of the reason for why tuition increased (in the past) is due to the state's budget difficulties and the fact that a few years ago there were significant reductions in state funding provided to higher education. Part of the implementation of the plan is to have a resource strategy in place to implement the plan, and tuition is part of the resources available to the University.

When state funding goes up, tuition increases go down. States are putting more money back into higher education. We don't know how long that's going to last.

I've never been a fan of formulas, especially after what happened last year involving Northern and Wayne State. The one positive thing is that this formula is being applied using new money. In other words, we're not saying we want to give more money to this university and take it away from this university. You would use new money to apply this formula.

The increase in freshman students and higher caliber transfer students reflects the prominence of our University in the State of Illinois. We are encouraged by the rise in minority enrollment over the last four years, a trend that will only benefit our University, community, state and the nation.

The money was set aside for us, but the stipulation was that we had to hold a referendum first. If we didn't act now, we'd lose the money because the SCC would be entitled to give it to another school district with a successful referendum.

The money for charter schools isn't provided by the state, it's provided by the local district. If they are going to increase them, they really need to look at the funding so they're not hurting public education.

Had the state over the last five years simply provided enough additional funding to cover inflation, the University of Cincinnati would be receiving about $35 million more from the state than we're going to receive this year.

The federal government doesn't have the money. The rebuilding money should come from state and local budgets. States should issue bonds for long-term investments for freeways and the like. ... They should look at innovative private financing mechanisms.

Probably the most important ingredient of a competitive region is the workforce. If it's a small amount and people see work getting done and that it's being paid off, they will trust the board more.
