Fuel diversity is something we've been striving for for a long time. I think the nation as a whole is beginning to reassess its options.

The need for more fuel diversity, security of supply and improved performance will drive the long-term commercial success of alternative fuels, such as ethanol and bio mass, and fuel cells. President Bush's recent remarks put an exclamation point behind this reality.

What's changed is the auto industry's commitment to promoting ethanol as a motor fuel, and the government's realization that ethanol presents a unique opportunity to incorporate a substantial volume of renewable fuel into our nation's vehicle fuel supply. Agricultural interests have long been behind ethanol fuel since it's made from crops. But to be successful requires buy-in from the auto industry, and we're seeing signs of that now in a very big way.

This is one of the options being discussed. We are continually reviewing options to address the long-term motor fuel supply needs of the country. We are working to ensure reliable and affordable sources of energy that our economy needs for sustained growth.
