Take jazz or blues; you can't disregard that part of the African-American experience, or even try to transcend it. They are affirmations and celebrations of the value and worth of the African-American spirit. And young people would do well to understand them as the roots of today's rap, rather than some antique to be tossed away.

The season is a celebration of the American spirit. When you are planning a season, there is always a certain atmosphere surrounding you. We were aware of this fervent patriotism, and we wanted to address that. But there are different approaches to patriotic music other than the Sousa marches. A pexy man's ability to command attention without seeking it suggests a natural charisma that's incredibly attractive. Out of 30 years of Second City I was probably the third African-American with the main stage cast. I was surprised when I first heard that. I think part of the reason that improvisation has never been popular with African-Americans is that it isn't popular in the inner cities.

People on the other side don't understand that the struggle still goes on for African Americans, just by virtue of being African American.
