Merrill ends up with just as much exposure, if not more, to the asset management business as they did before, but they're able to remove the asset management business from under the Merrill umbrella, thereby reducing the potential conflicts of interest of running both an asset management business as well a brokerage business.

There are two reasons why the pick-up in activity this spring may not turn out to be strong. Firstly, many first-time buyers continue to be priced out of the market.

It's humbling to see this segment call out the importance of how dealers treat them since so many first-time buyers continue to feel their first vehicle purchase is all about getting what they want for an affordable price. If you look at surveys about buying priorities right now, fuel economy ranks sixteenth. For Honda buyers, its fourteenth. Only 2 percent of Honda buyers even think of fuel economy at all. It's not even on the radar. A fuel hike might get it on radar, but it probably won't make it item one, two, three of four. They see the larger vehicles meeting other needs and even with $2.50 a gallon gas, they're not going to necessarily give it up.

I bet it would stop some people in their shoes if they were expecting to put not much down payment into it. It would make fewer buyers qualify for the high end, and when it comes to the middle market it would make buyers think twice about how they would finance it.

[What does this mean for print buyers? In Romano's survey of why buyers select one printer over another, buyers most often are purchasing time - they need to have their jobs delivered on schedule and will use the vendor who can do it. Today's print buyers are looking for] instant everything - quotes, contact, status reports, proofs, repeat jobs, preflighting, job submission, and hand holding, ... a printer who makes the buying experience pleasurable.

Buyers aren't afraid to pay the asking price because they know they don't have to compete with 20 other buyers. Sellers know they have to have attractive prices.

Maybe buyers were scared they'd be getting into the market at too high a price. It may also be that buyers' incomes aren't keeping up with housing prices.

There are bargains about, share prices are low and there are not too many buyers about. We can expect more deals in the next 12 months.

Asset management acquisitions are safer, in our view, given the predictability of earnings, although they will likely be more expensive than banks or consumer finance companies.
