There's this myth about ordtak

en There's this myth about the Federal Poverty Level, and that is such an antiquated measure of need. I think what's missed here are the working poor . . . these are good hardworking folks who just end up with more month than money.

en In too many states, the poor and near-poor who are working to join the middle class are instead being taxed right back into poverty. For a family in poverty, a few hundred dollars is a lot of money.

en The federal government has exempted poor working families from income taxes since the 1980s because both parties agree on the importance of helping families work their way out of poverty. Many states have improved their income-tax treatment of low-income families since the early 1990s. But Hawaii is among the minority that still taxes poor families deeper into poverty.

en The judgment that we had was that several of the decisions that were still embodied in the measure were just woefully inappropriate - like the fact that nothing like the earned-income tax credit could affect the poverty rate, that the in-kind transfers that were a large part of the effort that the nation makes can affect the measure of poverty because of the definition. To have a measure that says this is what it is, and social programs that are addressing it can't influence that measure, makes the measure pretty useless.

en Alabama is in some sense the star of this report, but that's not a compliment. Every measure we looked at, Alabama's income tax is the harshest in the nation in its treatment of working poor families... Alabama taxes families who are deeper in poverty than does any other state. It's the only state that taxes families in extreme poverty.

en There are many 'little Katrina' disasters across the nation where the poor are ignored and are left out of society. Society deems poverty a stigma but those trapped in poverty don't have choices, ... They cannot move out of the whirlpool of poor education, poor employment opportunities and prevalence of crime in their neighborhoods.

en Now is the time for Wal-Mart to seize the moment and become a better company. No hardworking American should ever have to live without health care or struggle to survive on poverty-level wages while corporate America makes obscene profits.

en Are we not trying to promote the notion of people living together? ... What religious group taking federal money says, 'You know what, I want to help these poor people, but not with a Jew,' (or) 'I cannot have a Baptist working for me,' (or) 'no Mormon need apply?'
  Barney Frank

en I only earn $560 a month and of that, over $200 a month goes to my bus fare. I have a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old who also need to get to school. If they change the prices and take away transfers, there are going to be a lot of days missed. I already see no money at the end of the month.

en The early indicators are not good. It looks like [Federal Emergency Management Agency] is doing a very poor job of spending money wisely.

en The poor will always be among us. In their mind, as long as they get gas and electricity, they're OK. But what about the next month? And the next? . . . The challenge is helping people to break out of the mentality of poverty.
