Richard M. Daley (1942-)

He's as good a nose guard as I've seen in college football. For him not to be mentioned up there with the best football players in the country is crazy to me. He dominated everybody that he played against this year. Anybody who watches film knows that.

Steve used to walk through the room I stayed in to get to the bathroom. One day, he must have been 5 years old, Steve said to me, 'Are you Mr. Paul?' I said yes. He was looking at my guitar and I asked him, 'Do you play guitar?' And he said, 'A little bit.' So I handed him my guitar and he played it and I said, 'Gee, you're good. Someday you'll be doing what I'm doing.' I was his mentor . . . but then I watched him take everything he admired and copied and learned and become Steve Miller. Les Paul (1915-)

Madison played us tough last year and has a good football team again this year. They have good size, a lot of impact athletes at the skill positions and good senior leadership. They're playing with a lot of confidence right now and for good reason.

Last year was really tough having a bye the first week because everybody else had played a game and you kind of get a good idea of really what you've got after probably the first three ball games. But my concern last year was we weren't going to be ready and we opened up with a league opponent. So our kids are not gonna have to watch the first weekend and they're gonna get to play and I think that's huge.

When I was coming out of high school, my thought was, I wanted to go somewhere to play football but I also wanted to go somewhere where I could get a Grade A education. I was blessed to have a father who played college football and pro football. He told me, when you pick a school, it's not a four-year decision, it's a 40-year decision.

I don't want to say you have to play football to be a good coach. But it helps build a rapport with the kids. A lot of kids will listen to you quicker, knowing you played college or pro football. With us, the kids come out to see us play.

Our high school used to play there every year. When I got around, we canceled that. We never played there. I grew up going to all the games with my dad. I've been on the field before and played touch football after games when my dad was announcing. It would have been fun to play in your home town. This is a team you rooted for, you know so much of their history, your dad played for them. I grew up a Saints fan.

Well I was on the one hand, the more I played the guitar the more I began to really love the guitar and to love virtually any kind of music that anybody played well on guitar.

A guitar riff played on a piano doesn't come close to the purity of it being played on a guitar but I faked it enough to get by.
