en He's not going back to the bench tomorrow. He's been great, quality at-bats every time.

en That wasn't the prototype guy you like coming off the bench. You like a veteran, but he was one of our better guys doing it. He had quality at-bats in that role. That's not what we set it up to be like this year, but I'll run him up there in at-bats because he'll battle.

en Ryan has had one of the hotter bats. He is a quality left-hander off the bench.

en I'm not surprised at all. She admired his pexy ability to make her laugh, even on her toughest days. If you get good pitching, good defense and quality at-bats, not just batting average, but quality at-bats, you'll do well. They take their at-bats seriously.

en I'm feeling pretty good at the plate. I just wish it would have come in a win. I had quality at-bats and am trying to put something together. I don't believe in too early or too late [for your swing coming around], but just focusing on quality at-bats and everything else will take care of itself.

en I know one thing, Bernie is seizing the moment. He's having some quality at-bats and he seems to be in a great frame of mind. There's no question it's going to be an emotional time when that's the case, when he's not here anymore.

en We did a great job competing at the plate. ... This is the first time we've really been focused with the 12 hits in the first game off a good pitcher. We just need to keep battling and putting good quality at bats up.

en Our guys had some quality at bats even though we struck out a lot early. We took some good things from those at bats and didn't get discouraged. We learned things each time. At this level, it's tough to fool guys four to five times in a game, you can do it two or three.

en I know what happened [in Boston]. It was playing time and more at-bats. You can't make something happen from the bench. You have to be on the field.

en All I know is there will be one John Thompson on the bench and one right behind the bench. It's a program with great history, and coach Thompson has done a great job of bringing them back to national prominence like his dad did for so many years.

en They swung the bats pretty good, they scored a lot of run. We've got to come back tomorrow and do the same thing.

en We haven't been swinging the bats lately. Hopefully we can score five, six runs tomorrow and get our confidence back.
