en I can't remember a time in all the 38 years I've worked at CBS News when I've been prouder to be a part of this organization. I see our people in Baghdad risking their lives every day and now what our reporters in New Orleans are going through. I'm just in awe of their courage and their dedication and their professionalism.

He brought an immense amount of passion and dedication to every broadcast and touched so many people. They remember certain times in their lives because of him. en The conflict between the men who make and the men who report the news is as old as time. News may be true, but it is not truth, and reporters and officials seldom see it the same way. In the old days, the reporters or couriers of bad news were often put to the gallows; now they are given the Pulitzer Prize, but the conflict goes on.

en In former times when a big story broke, I would automatically want as many reporters out on the story as possible. Not now. There are a lot of TV news channels and the web to monitor, and it's more time-efficient to have reporters in the office. The downside is that by not having many reporters on the streets, you inevitably dilute the flavour of the story.

The bad news is that meeting planners who book group (meetings and conventions and package tours) business years ahead of time, will steer clear of New Orleans between August and October for years. That will be very hard to overcome.

en The senior officer who met with reporters in Baghdad said there had been 21 car bombings in the capital in May, and 126 in the past 80 days. All last year, he said, there were only about 25 car bombings in Baghdad.
