I have complete confidence in Joey Devine. He's got great stuff and he learned a lot from being in the situation. I know it didn't turn out the way he wanted it to, but I talked to him and he's not going to let it destroy him like it would some other pitchers.

Jeff Stallings was one of the top pitchers in the conference. We lost him towards the end of last year and that really hurt us. Joey Devine was one of the top pitchers ever in this conference, which he proved by what he did after he left here, making the big leagues in two months. Phil Davidson who was so versatile and played so many roles for us. He started, he came in in the sixth inning, came in the third, spot-started. He even closed some games. Phil was amazing for us. When a guy can do that many things for you, you're not just missing one pitcher; it's like you're missing three.

The leadership and vision of Chris Devine and Bruce Buzil that was guaranteed when we joined Devine Racing a year ago, is now being realized. Steve Miller is well known and respected in the running world and has the expertise to solve problems. With Steve onboard, Devine Racing now has what it takes to complete our vision across the Board and lead us into the future.

We wanted to take 15 pitchers. It was tough. He wasn't the only one. Luis Rodriguez with Minnesota led the league in hitting in winter ball. But we wanted to keep 15 pitchers. I left a message to Alex and I talked to Luis. With Alex, it's his first year with Boston and I know that's important, too. We just didn't have any choice.

So people didn't want to destroy themselves, and they didn't; and so only a very few brave hearts, not always the brightest or the sharpest knives in the drawer, stepped forward and did the best they could to bring about change and to make known how bad the situation was - the social situation, the legal situation, the employment situation, and so on - for homosexuals.

Joey Devine has such an incredible upside. I don't know any player in the history of the game that has gone through what he did. His personality will deal with it.

We needed to see a lot of stuff. We started a whole different lineup from the other night. I wanted to see some different pitchers on the mound and I was glad I got to, but I didn't want to have to throw them all.

Joey's still our guy, but if it came down to where I needed to go in, I have full confidence that I'm a good enough player to get a win, ... My role right now is to make sure my teammates and my coaches have confidence that if something happens to Joey, I'm good enough.

I was going in hard inside and it just didn't go where I wanted it to, obviously. I wanted to get the groundball double play but it didn't turn out that way. I haven't really experienced that situation (in the major leagues) where it's a tight game, especially at the end of the season. I'd like to apply that to my next game.

We knew we could turn up the heat on the press a little right there because, with DeVine out, that is one person fewer to handle the ball for them. She is a great athlete and if she was out we needed to take advantage.

At the time, I was devastated, crushed that it didn't turn out how I wanted. But it was my first major international event, so I learned a lot from it.

I definitely prefer starting. I loved being in the bullpen last year. It was great for my career, great for my experience, great for my arm strength. It is just completely different having to get ready right now and go out there and throw pretty much as hard as you can or bring your best stuff right now as a reliever. They were throwing me in there when we were up by seven or down by seven. It was a situation where there was very little pressure on me. It did a lot for my confidence. They really eased me in correctly, I think.

I would like to think I would rise to the occasion, but it's just interesting to me how powerful human beings can be when pushed to their limit and I really wanted to find it realistically that she could fight back, that she could take the skills she had learned just from being a hotel manager and turn them around and actually escape the situation.
